Silenos Riding a Wineskin

January 31st, 2013 by ronlute

Silenos Riding a Wineskin, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

Silenos, a companion of Bacchus the Roman god of wine and shown here riding a wineskin, as I captured him at the Getty Villa in Malibu. Another from our trip last fall. I used Lightroom 4 here to darken some of the area that had hot spots from the sun and also to work on getting the water stream to stand out. It seems to work OK and as always LR is such a joy to work with and really makes it easy pull that creative vision out of an image.

The Bridge

The Bridge, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

It’s been a while since I took a photo of our bridge. It’s always a bit difficult to use a subject that has been so photographed. I was there this week and thought the sky was a bit interesting so I took a couple of quick shots. I only had about 15 minutes to shoot during a quick break from work (expect the current work load to finish in a week and to have some real time to get out) so I didn’t really know if this POV would work but I gave it a try. I do realize I need to work on using the masks in onOne and I should be able to really improve the work I’ve been doing. But for now I do like the sky and hopefully will see some more real soon after next week.

Fishing and Such

Fishing and Such, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

Today I got out for a little bit and had a chance to shoot a little at the River. I thought it would be a good exercise to put some people in one of the photos that I put through the paces in the onOne plug-in.
I don’t think it’s too bad as the filters seem to do a fair job of leaving the fishermen here reasonable looking. I’ll have to work with it a bit and really see how it does.

Ocean Grass

Ocean Grass, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

Here is another one from my trip up the coast last fall at Cambria. This one to me was more about a feeling, hence the almost painterly background. I like some of the looks I get using onOne even though I probably overdo it sometimes (like now?). But still it has the feeling of something that I could live with hanging on my wall.

Dreamland Playground

Dreamland Playground, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

As I was working tonight on another project I found that I really liked this image and decided to “play” with it a bit in onOne. It’s a little different than many of the ones I’ve been working on lately but still most fun. The colors and reflection just kind of give it a dream like quality.

Barn Dance

Barn Dance, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

Here is a subject that I want to see more of so I can let people see more of, from me. I really do love old dilapidated barns and buildings and will make a point of getting more this year. This one is a really poor photo that I only put here so I’ll have a standard to measure by.

Copper Falls

Copper Falls, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

I named it copper but only ’cause I didn’t want to call it golden. But it was. This was of course caused by the end of day light and made for great color. It really is amazing how much and how fast the colors change at the end (or beginning) of the day. I am more likely to see the end these days because I rarely get out that early on these work days.

Done, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

To me the first word was dead but then I realized that done was a better word. I have a fascination with flora that has run it’s course and is now “done”. The textures I find pleasing on the eye.
The trick is to come up with something that could be pleasing to others besides myself. I believe that in the future I need to spend a little more time really looking at the subject. Going out for a half hour lunch break is really not going to make it happen.

Dam, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

As much as I love using Silver Efex Pro and doing a couple of clicks and being done I also know that it s a great program but as they all are they are really just a starting point. First I put together this pano with 5 frames and made adjustments in LR. Then into Silver Efex and instead of just stopping there I played with the color sliders tonight to get it closer to what I really wanted. So not huge but a start of making the image more my own.

American Bluffs

January 22nd, 2013 by ronlute

American Bluffs, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

I’ve always loved this view of the bluffs on the Sacramento River right in town. I grew up in Southern California (L.A. County) and there weren’t any water ways like this. Some little streams and of course the Los Angeles River 😉 toward the city but nothing like the Sacramento. This view is right where lots of people stop and feed the birds so always some action there. There’s something about the Black & White treatment that really rocks this scene.
