Nine Gauge Fire Engine

Nine Gauge Fire Engine, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

The fire engines are really cool pieces of equipment with all the valves and gauges. Like a fine Swiss watch only much bigger.

Firehouse #1 Machine Shop

Firehouse #1 Machine Shop, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

The fire stations have to be fairly self-contained in a lot of ways including machine shop and bays to work on equipment. At least when the station was built. I believe some of ways have changed over the years but it remains a fact that we would be in dire straits if we didn’t have our fire stations.

Spinning at the Fair

Spinning at the Fair, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

The last fair I’ll be attending for 2013. I didn’t get too many shots tonight as I was not feeling up to par. My stomach was kind of like this ride. Spinning. It’s fun to be able to shoot something like this that doesn’t require a tripod to look OK. Handheld. The only problem is that later I discovered I had the lens on MF. Oh well it still looks OK.

Real Heroes

Real Heroes, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

Here is the headgear real heroes wear. Today we had the privilege of touring Redding Fire Station #1. Station 1 is a finely built old building. The plaque in front reads 1939. It was an interesting tour of where some of our local heroes work.

Fair Surprise

September 28th, 2013 by ronlute

Fair Surprise, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

I went to the Tehama District Fair today and I really wasn’t expecting to see big cats. But there they were. Two big ones and a couple of cubs too. It was kind of amazing to get so close to these big guys. They were quite beautiful.

Don’t Fence Me In

Don’t Fence Me In, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

The horse corral by our second stop. This was connected to a small little building that had a feeding bin that opened onto the corral area.

An Eye on the Girls

An Eye on the Girls, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

While we were driving out on a dirt road to find one of the old stage coach stops we found some pronghorn antelope. Of course they didn’t let us get too close but I put my 70-200mm on and with that beautiful sharpness of the L glass I could at least crop down fairly nice. Makes really appreciate the wildlife shooters with the big glass. This guy on the left was keeping a close watch on his harem and when we finally got a little too close they were off.

Front Door Welcome

September 26th, 2013 by ronlute

Front Door Welcome, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

Here is a view of the big house’s front door and kitchen windows. We saw a number of shelves in the room at the left and it just had to be the kitchen. This also had to be the front door and this side of the house faced the highway. Out around the back of the house was the family plot and what was left of the outhouse.

Big B&W House

September 25th, 2013 by ronlute

Big B&W House, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

I have an earlier shot from this angle of this big house in color but I realized that I am liking the B&W treatment of this work. I needed a redo so that I would have another in the set. I am thinking about doing a book from this trip. I need to do some research and see which book service is recommended for black and white.
I am getting near the end of processing for this work and I am already thinking about where to go next. This is definitely the time of year to plan for more of these type of trips as I’m likely to get more great skies.

Hobo Castle

Hobo Castle, originally uploaded by ronWLS.

Out on one of the little traveled roads we came across this fine little house or what was left of it. Someone had taken a railroad boxcar and plopped it out in the desert to make themselves a home. I guess it was kind of an early mobile home.
